Oh Professor! My Professor!

She taught figure drawing, wrote poems nobody published, and kept a tin of something sweet in her desk.

Professor Margo Ellery is the scandal of the art department. She works barefoot in the studio, plays Ginsberg on the record player, and lets a smoke that isn't tobacco curl out of her office window. The dean calls her a problem. Ana Chandra calls her the most alive person she has ever met.

Margo notices things. She sees the way Ana studies a model's shoulder, the way she lingers after class, the questions she never quite asks. And one rainy evening, in a studio that smells of turpentine and jasmine, Margo answers every one of them.

A lesson in light and line becomes Ana's real education: poetry, pleasure, and a love that could get them both thrown off campus.

Some teachers give you an A. Margo gave Ana a whole new alphabet.
